I recently ran across a post with the following title: ’12 Smart Ways to Lock a Door Without a Lock’. I admit, I am like a cat. My curiosity got the best of me. I read the post, only to discover that none of the solutions offered represent a legitimate security strategy. I was left realizing that the smartest way to lock a door is with a modern smart lock.
Getting by in a Pinch
Fairness dictates explaining that the previously mentioned post was not intended to offer readers a permanent solution to having no door lock. Each of the solutions would enable a person to get by in a pinch, but none of them are legitimately secure. None of them are secure enough to be permanent.
For example, the first no-lock solution was to wedge a doorstop underneath the door. This might work temporarily, at least on a door that opens inward. If the doorstop is big enough and can adequately grip the floor, it could prevent unauthorized entry from someone trying casually to get in. But it wouldn’t stop an intruder willing to put a heavy shoulder into the door.
Real Security Requires Real Locks
Although each of the twelve solutions could temporarily work in a pinch, real security requires real lock. And for my money, the best locks on the market right now are smart locks.
A smart lock is a lock that can be activated and deactivated without a key. It can also be accessed remotely with a mobile device and a companion app. Consumers can purchase standalone units and smart locks included in a prepackaged system from companies like Vivint Home Security.
Vivint explains the customers appreciate smart locks for their added security and convenience. The keyless entry they offer brings an end to fumbling with your keys at the front door. Remote access allows locking and unlocking the door from anywhere. And by tying a smart lock into a home security system, a homeowner can guarantee that forgetting to lock the door is never a problem. The system automatically locks it after a certain amount of time.
Keyless Entry Options
As for the keyless entry aspect, there is no shortage of possibilities. The most common keyless entry method is keypad entry. A homeowner programs the lock with a 4–8-digit code. Opening the door is as simple as punching in the code.
Most smart locks can also be opened with a smartphone app. Just bring up the app as you pull in the driveway and tap your screen. You can walk right in without having to fumble with your keys.
Biometric access is also starting to emerge. Consumers can now buy smart locks accessed with fingerprints, retina scans, and facial recognition. I even read about a new line of smart locks that can read the vein pattern in your palm to identify you.
Smart locks can even be linked to your cell phone by way of GPS. Why would you want to do that? Because it allows you to lock and unlock your door based solely on your location. The door automatically locks behind you as you drive away from the house. It automatically unlocks when you arrive home.
Go Smart or Go Home
As far as I am concerned, it’s time to go smart or go home. Forget the twelve solutions in the previously mentioned post. Forget old, outdated handled and keyed deadbolt locks. The modern smart lock is a superior solution whose time has come. It is the best way to lock your door.
